Affordability after nursing school.... San Diego
Once I finish my BSN at Fresno State, the plan is to get a job in San Diego. My parents say they'll sell the current house in Fresno and purchase a small place in San Diego. I don't know how realistic and practical that is but I can't resist the idea of living in the paradise-like city of SD. I'll have to make monthly payments on the house or 2 bedroom condominium, though, if I can afford them as a nurse. That's in a year, which is so close. I'm super excited. I've been wanting a change of scenery. The San Diego lifestyle contradicts the frugal life that I've been meaning to live in accordance with.
Everyone deserves happiness. What makes happiness differs from person to person. I am pretty sure that I want to complete a master's degree in nursing, but while I do that, I'll have responsibilities towards my parents. They really want me to live in San Diego with them, which means I'll have to pay the bills. Although I like that idea, I want to focus on myself with the master's degree in nursing, which is an economic and educational investment. I'll have to look at part-time online programs that are located in Southern California.
With the high house/condominium prices in Southern California, how can people afford to live there, especially as a nurse and such. I mean, I understand that someone like Uncle Tommy who's an investment professional and Aunt Susie (an accountant) can afford to live in SF Bay Area because of their respective occupations, or my other uncle in Los Angeles and his occupation as a retired engineer. I'm mad stressing about how I'm going to afford monthly rent if I was to move outside of Central California.
It'd be less stressful if I married a husband with a high earning income, but that didn't happen, and at my age of 41, I'm basically not considering marriage as a default option towards financial security. I have to rely on myself and my independence as a working nurse professional.
Even if my first job was in San Diego, there's possibility that I can be working for a skilled nursing facility, which I imagine to be lower paying than the hospital.
Thinking about my future once I finish my BSN is stressful. There's a lot to worry about.
I'd be crazy to try moving back to NYC but a part of me wants to try living there as a working RN. It'd be interesting to see how different life is as a working professional versus a student.
